Lakeside Daisy (Tetraneuris herbacea)
Greene 1898 |
Synonyms: Hymenoxys acaulis var. glabra, Hymenoxys herbacea, Actinea herbacea, eastern fournerved daisy, fournerved starflower, Manitoulin gold, stemless rubberweed |
Tetraneuris herbacea is a rare species restricted to the Great Lakes region in North America, where it is present in Ontario, Ohio, Michigan, and Illinois. In Ontario, Lakeside Daisy is found at the shores of Lake Huron on the Bruce Peninsula and Manitoulin Island. This species grows on alvars, the limestone barrens with little plant cover, rocky shores, and sometimes openings in coniferous forest. It flowers from late April through early July. T. herbacea is threatened by habitat destruction, including fire suppression, limestone quarrying, off-road vehicles activity, and construction. Sometimes, a similar-looking Coreopsis lanceolata is mistaken for Tetraneuris herbacea.
